Longford Town Attractions
Longford being one of the central towns of Ireland has many bars, quality restaurants, a buzzing nightlife and boasts a variety of recreational facilities including a new public leisure centre and pool, a golf course and multiplex cinema.
Some prominent buildings in Longford town include St. Mel’s Cathedral and St. Mel’s College.
Since 2002 there has been significant expansion in the retail sector. Allied to this growth has been the development of the cultural infrastructure. The town draws in significant numbers to its pubs, restaurants and nightclubs which offer a very significant social scene.
Longford town plays host to a number of major events annually including:
- The Johnny Keenan Banjo Festival, which features a celebration of Irish Traditional and American Bluegrass Music.
- The Longford Marathon which takes place every August.
- The Marquee in Drumlish festival.
Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre
The Centre interprets an Iron Age bog road which was built in the year 148 BC across the boglands close to the River Shannon. The oak road is the largest of its kind to have been uncovered in Europe. More on Heritage Ireland website

Strokestown Park House
18th century mansion which has been faithully restored and retains its original furnishings. Also famine museum. Visit the Strokestown Park website.
Fishing
At the heart of the Lakelands of Ireland, Longford is the undiscovered host of the best coarse fishing available, with a choice of over thirty lakes, rivers and canals never more than ten minutes away, including the River Shannon's hot water stretch in Lanesboro, Co. Carrigglas manor which is currently under restoration will offer a new, superb 18-hole championship golf course and 3-hole golf academy, co-designed by World no.3 Retief Goosen and renowned golf course architect Jeff Howes. Carrigglas Manor house was designed by Daniel Robertson and completed in 1840. Over 600 acres of parkland and woodland are available which offer walks, equestrian centre and leisure activities all with the security offered by a walled estate.
